We’re a bit late on starting this feature, but here is our staff-exclusive Air Cache Photo of the Week.
The USS Wasp docked at the Boston Fish Pier for Navy Week 2012 and OpSail Boston. Boston played host to about two-dozen tall ships and naval vessels for the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
In this photo, a crowd lines up to tour a MV-22 “Osprey” on July 5, the last day Wasp was in port. We are working on a lengthy article about the “Osprey,” which has a promising future but checkered past.
We spoke to the crew of this MV-22, and they toed the line nicely, talking about how much fun the airplane is to fly while hinting at it being a challenge. But we later talked to a different helicopter pilot, who said “It’s not there yet. This might be where things are going, but not this one. Not in this form.”
The MV-22 stands out in a crowd. We could see it for more than a mile away from the Wasp, rising above its flight deck.
